Ex-Lung Association Chief Leases His Lungs to E-Cigarette Industry

'Science should triumph over opinion,' says past president of the American Lung Association

e-cigaretteSenators and state attorneys general are clamoring for the Food and Drug Administration to quickly restrict the sale of electronic cigarettes, but the past president of the American Lung Association, Charles Connor, says e-cigarettes may be "the breakthrough product" that stomps out carcinogen-packed conventional cigarettes.
Connor, president and CEO of the lung association from 2008 to 2012, joined the Electronic Cigarette Industry Group (ECIG) on Thursday as a paid consultant. He will serve as a conduit between public health experts, regulators and the booming industry, which will have an estimated $1.7 billion in U.S. sales this year.

Districts ban E-Cigarettes from sporting events

e-cigarettesNORMAN, Okla. — Some school districts in the state are taking steps to fight the electronic cigarette fad on campus.
Those e-cigarettes use liquid, allowing users to inhale flavored vapor which contains different levels of nicotine. In some cases there is no nicotine in the vapor.
However, some school districts say it’s not so much the device but the example and the nicotine they want to keep off campus. It’s a move Norman schools made this week.

Shelly Hickman, with Norman Public Schools, said, “The board of education approved new policy that treats e-cigarettes just as we treat other tobacco products on our school campuses and that means we don’t want them. They are not allowed.”

Should I take up e-cigarettes in order to stop smoking?

The medical community is divided on the matter of e-cigarettes, but they can't be as bad for you as the real thing.

e-cigarettes
Cheryl Cole, Robert Pattinson and Kate Moss have all been seen "vaping". Puffing on e-cigarettes, which produce vapour instead of smoke has been tried by up to 35% of smokers, according to the public health charity Ash (Action on Smoking and Health).

The number of UK users rose from 700,000 last year to 1.3 million this year. Smokers seem to use them on top off their normal cigarette intake, or to help them quit.

But are e–cigarettes much less damaging than the real thing? These battery-operated devices contain a cartridge filled with a liquid solution of nicotine, propylene glycol (used in special effects to create fog) and flavourings that range from traditional tobacco to candy floss. Puffing activates a heating element that vapourises the liquid in the cartridge, producing a mist that is inhaled.

Will E-Cigarettes Destroy Big Tobacco?

When I first read about electronic cigarettes, I was a non-believer. Cigarettes have been around forever, how could they be replaced by e-cigarettes? While it may not happen overnight, e-cigarettes could change the way people smoke and the way big tobacco makes money.

What's an e-cigarette?
The way an e-cigarette works may differ (according to brand), but basically, it is a device made to heat and vaporize a mixture known as e-liquid with nicotine inside a cartridge using a rechargeable battery. It has no ash, smell or the usual combustion that happens after you light up a conventional cigarette. This makes an e-cigarette 99% healthier than the alternative.

Is ‘Vaping’ Better Than Smoking?

A growing number of smokers are turning to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to get their nicotine fix instead of smoking traditional cigarettes. Is "vaping" better than smoking? The e-cigarette industry would like us to believe that it is. But more research needs to be done, and federal regulation is needed.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently does not regulate the manufacture, marketing and sale of e-cigarettes. In New York State, they cannot be sold to minors, but other states are still trying to determine how to deal with this relatively new product. As Mitch Zeller, Director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, has said, "Right now, it's the wild, wild west." Buyer beware.

e-Cigarettes: Electronic cigarette business is smoking

Aug 13, 2013 by
e-cigarettesCigarettes still satisfy a lot of smokers, but after years of doctors’ warnings and countless dollars spent on packs or cartons, some are ready for a change. What they’ve found is a cheaper alternative that’s giving the cigarette something to smolder about.
Patrick Gleason, owner of Three Days Smoke Shop in Gates andThree Days Vapor Lounge in Greece, said electronic cigarettes are becoming more popular among smokers trying to kick the habit. E-cigarettes use a battery-powered heating element and flavored “e-juice” laced with nicotine to create an inhalable water vapor that looks and feels like smoke.

NJOY: The E-Cigarette That Aims To Snuff Out Smoking

Jul 18, 2013 by
NJOYOver the past couple of years, electronic cigarettes have triggered a quiet revolution in the world of nicotine. For hundreds of years, nicotine consumption meant tobacco combustion – and for more than a century, cigarettes have been the dominant form of nicotine delivery device. Over the past decade and a half, nicotine patches and gum have been widely available, and there is even a drug, Varenicline – sold in the US under the brand name Chantix – to help smokers kick the habit. But almost a sixth of the U.S. population still smokes – in part because none of the alternatives mimics the usage pattern and satisfaction smokers derive from their habit. That’s where the electronic cigarette comes in. I recently spoke with Andrew Beaver, Chief Marketing Officer of NJOY, an e-cigarette brand on a mission.

E-cigarettes an emerging alternative

Jul 15, 2013 by
E-cigarettes remain in a regulatory haze in Illinois.E-cigarettes
The one bill sent to Gov. Pat Quinn in the spring legislative session bans sale of the cigarette alternative to anyone younger than 18. But the debate continues on just how to regulate e-cigarettes.
About all that both sides agree on is that some type of regulation is coming with the growing popularity of the products.
“I expect there will be some things to come as more vapor stores are opening online and in communities,” said Niki Castleman, who opened Tribble Vapors at 2413 Denver Drive in Springfield last spring.
Tribble Vapors is among the first group of e-cigarette retail outlets in the region. The shop is named for Castleman’s partner in the business.
Castleman lives in St. Louis but stays with family in Springfield as needed to take care of the shop. Herself a smoker for nearly 30 years, Castleman said there are probably 15 to 20 e-cigarette shops in the St. Louis metro area.
“It’s just growing in leaps and bounds,” said Castleman, who also uses her products.
Bloomberg News reported in June e-cigarette sales are expected to hit $1 billion within a few years.
