Davies continues fight for e-cigarette users (UK)
Rochdale Lib Dem MEP Chris Davies has vowed to continue to campaign for e-cigarette users after a key European Parliament committee voted to restrict e-cigs yesterday.
MEPs voted in committee to treat e-cigarettes as medicines, reducing their availability compared to tobacco and putting big new costs on users.
E-cigarettes work by vaporising nicotine that is then inhaled, providing nicotine addicts with their ‘hit’ without many of the carcinogens and secondhand smoke produced by conventional cigarettes.

New Hanover board to enlighten public on e-cigarettes
The New Hanover County Board of Health on Wednesday passed a resolution encouraging regulation of electronic cigarettes and the study of their health effects.
The county has already banned e-cigarettes at the local health department. Use of e-cigarettes by county employees follows the same restrictions as tobacco use.
The resolution essentially states that the board of health does not believe that e-cigarettes are proven to be a safe alternative to smoking. The board's responsibilities include protecting and promoting public health and promoting a safe and healthy community. One goal is to identify and reduce health risks in the community, so board members felt compelled to establish a unified stance on the topic.

REGULATION OF ELECTRONIC cigarettes and a ban on ‘slim’ cigarettes could be on the way following a vote by MEPs today.
Nessa Childers MEP said there had been a strong vote today in her Public Health Committee on the EU tobacco control directive, “despite the massive industry lobbying against the law”.
“As co-chair of the ‘MEPs against Cancer’ forum in the European Parliament, I have campaigned and pressed for this anti-tobacco legislation for a long time,” she said.

Estelle Green affectionately refers to her electronic cigarette as her "lifesaver."
The Haiku Plantation grandmother began smoking cigarettes decades ago as a senior in high school. She quit for a few years but returned to her two-plus pack-a-day habit after gaining 25 pounds. Since switching to an e-cigarette three years ago, Green said she's saved hundreds of dollars, banished the lingering tobacco smell that bothered her grandchildren and says the spots on her lungs and her wheeze have vanished.
But the switch brought something even better.
"I'm able to sing in church," she said, "and I can hit the higher notes."
Green has joined millions of people nationwide who have made the switch from traditional cigarettes that burn tobacco to e-cigarettes, the tobacco-free, battery-powered technology that delivers nicotine in vapor form. For a new generation of smokers -- and older ones who have found themselves increasingly ostracized -- e-cigarettes are seen as a hipper alternative to smoking and one that is more socially acceptable.
The estimated 3.5 million users nationwide represent a nearly fivefold increase in three years, according to the Tobacco Vapor Electronic Cigarette Association. Electronic cigarettes are a $600 million market, the association says.

E-cigarettes: Is a smoking alternative being choked by regulation?
Dozens of countries are introducing legislation restricting the use of e-cigarettes, but their proponents say they are harmless and their use could in fact save millions of lives. Could they be right?
A group of friends sits around a table in a pub in south London, exchanging stories and putting the world to rights in a cloud of scented vapour.
One of them is 31-year-old Jonny Lavery.
"I had a big problem with death, a really big problem with dying," he says. "I wanted to avoid dying at all costs."
But three years ago, Lavery realised that as a smoker of 15 years, his chance of doing this was diminishing. Roughly half the world's smokers die from their habit. The trouble was Johnny just enjoyed it too much to quit.
Then he found an alternative - the electronic cigarette.
These gizmos contain batteries and "e-liquid" - a solution of propylene glycol or glycerine - containing a nicotine dose. A battery inside the e-cigarette heats up a coil attached to a wick. When the liquid is presented to the hot wick it produces vapour which can be inhaled.
They don't quite match the nicotine hit of a real cigarette, but they come close enough to have won over 1.3 million users in the UK alone (compared to nine million tobacco smokers). In the US, e-cigarette sales could pass $1bn (£650m) this year - up from $600m (£390m) in 2012.
Since there is no smoke, puffing on e-cigarettes is called vaping, not smoking. The group of men and women sitting in the pub call themselves vapers - they meet regularly to vape and to talk about vaping.
A little nerdy, they resemble a gang of home-brewing enthusiasts more than a stop-smoking support group.
They inspect one another's vaporisers - which come in all manner of shapes and sizes - and sniff one another's vapour. "I'm currently vaping toffee popcorn," says Shari Levy, emanating sweetness. "And this one here is coffee. And this one is tutti frutti - that's nice for the summer. Amaretto with a morning coffee is just delicious."

Tobacco Companies Introduce Their First Electronic Cigarettes
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Coming to a store shelf near you: The latest offering from some major tobacco companies is an electronic cigarette. They’ve been on the market for years, but as Health Watch reporter Stephanie Stahl show us, this is the first time tobacco companies are getting in the game.
Gregory Conley says his electronic cigarette changed his life.
“I picked up an electronic cigarette and overnight, I had stopped smoking,” Conley said.
Instead of smoking, he puffs on this. An electronic cigarette. It uses a battery to heat liquid with nicotine. People inhale the vapor. Advocates say e-cigarettes are a great alternative to traditional cigarettes.
