Will E-Cigarettes Destroy Big Tobacco?

When I first read about electronic cigarettes, I was a non-believer. Cigarettes have been around forever, how could they be replaced by e-cigarettes? While it may not happen overnight, e-cigarettes could change the way people smoke and the way big tobacco makes money.

What's an e-cigarette?
The way an e-cigarette works may differ (according to brand), but basically, it is a device made to heat and vaporize a mixture known as e-liquid with nicotine inside a cartridge using a rechargeable battery. It has no ash, smell or the usual combustion that happens after you light up a conventional cigarette. This makes an e-cigarette 99% healthier than the alternative.

Is ‘Vaping’ Better Than Smoking?

A growing number of smokers are turning to electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) to get their nicotine fix instead of smoking traditional cigarettes. Is "vaping" better than smoking? The e-cigarette industry would like us to believe that it is. But more research needs to be done, and federal regulation is needed.
Vaping

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) currently does not regulate the manufacture, marketing and sale of e-cigarettes. In New York State, they cannot be sold to minors, but other states are still trying to determine how to deal with this relatively new product. As Mitch Zeller, Director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products, has said, "Right now, it's the wild, wild west." Buyer beware.

International Vapor Group CEO, Nick Molina, Interviewed About E-Cigarette Industry

International Vapor Group CEO, Nick Molina, Interviewed About E-Cigarette Industry on Bloomberg TV

Carina Ost
MIAMI, FL--(Marketwired - August 28, 2013) - International Vapor Group (IVG), a leader in the electronic cigarette industry, announced today that CEO, Nick Molina, appeared on Bloomberg TV's "Money Moves" with Deirdre Bolton. The show focuses on innovative companies and IVG leads through manufacturing, distributing and marketing some of the biggest names of e-cigarettes, including South Beach Smoke, EverSmoke, NutriCigs, and new retail concept VaporZone.

Bolton began the interview by highlighting the explosive growth of the e-cigarette industry thanks to celebrities like Leonardo DiCaprio and companies like International Vapor Group.

The first question was focused on how Molina is preparing for FDA regulations. Molina noted that all International Vapor Group's brands, including South Beach Smoke, were well prepared and actually embraced FDA regulations. "We are diversifying our distribution through distributors, authorized retailers and our own brick and mortar stores in the confines that may be set by the regulators," said Molina. Molina reminded Bolton that the main issue was in age verification to prevent selling to minors and that is something IVG takes very seriously.

The company CEO was careful to note that e-cigarettes were a more convenient alternative to smoking traditional cigarettes and can tout things like no smoke and no ash.

When Bolton pressed on competition in the industry and how Molina is protecting his brands' position, he responded that innovation is key. The CEO added, "When you look at e-liquid, we are one of the few companies that manufacture it in the U.S. Most of my competitors manufacture their e-juice in China." This 100% USA made liquid nicotine juice is a huge differentiator across all International Vapor Group brands including: South Beach Smoke, NutriCigs, EverSmoke and a new retail concept called VaporZone.

E-cigarette advertising could be coming to...

E-cigarette advertising could be coming to television

vuse.JPG
Tom De Poto/The Star-LedgerBy Tom De Poto/The Star-Ledger
on August 27, 2013 at 7:54 AM, updated August 27, 2013 at 7:55 AM
It’s been 52 years since Fred Flintstone lit a Winston cigarette on television, and about 43 years since tobacco advertising was banned from TV altogether. But Reynolds American, the nation’s second largest tobacco company, plans to return to the airwaves with a 60-second televised commercial next month.

The ad won’t feature any of the Flintstones, or Joe Camel or any other cartoon character.
It won’t even feature tobacco. The ad will be for Vuse, the company’s entry into the electronic cigarette market.

R.J. Reynolds Vapor Company, a subsidiary of Reynolds American, has been selling its e-cigarette in Colorado on a trial basis before a national rollout.
The ad will feature lab technicians in white coats, according to Bloomberg.
E-cigarettes are battery-powered plastic or metal tubes containing a liquid nicotine solution that when heated creates vapors a “smoker” can inhale. Users – who prefer to be called vapers -- can get their nicotine without the other harmful chemicals in tobacco filled cigarettes.

Tobacco advertising on television was banned by the federal government in 1971 because of its harmful effects on smokers. But e-cigarettes are not currently regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, which opens the playing field for the new product.

French e-cigarette study - media misrepresent facts

From Casaa:

An article published Monday in The Daily Mail announced "E-cigarettes are as harmful as cigarettes and could cause cancer, claimsCASAAstudy." The article stated that a French consumer magazine, 60 Millions Consommateurs (60 Million Consumers), had branded the devices as 'far from the harmless gadgets they're sold as by manufacturers'. Soon, news outlets from all over the world were reporting that "E-cigarettes may be carcinogenic" and "E-cigarettes as harmful as cigarettes."

According to the 60 Millions Consommateurs, which is published by the National Consumers' Institute (a government-funded organization somewhat similar to Consumer Reports in the U.S.), their researchers tested 10 e-cigarettes. This "report" comes after the French government announced in May this year its intent to ban electronic cigarette use in public places, which has outraged French e-cigarette consumers and sellers.

After the news broke, Clive Bates, former head of ASH-UK and a tobacco harm reduction advocate, announced on his blog that he had issued a complaint about the Daily Mail article to the Press Complaints Commission

FDA Denies Talk of Online E-Cigarette Sales Ban

SILVER SPRING, Md. -- Despite media reports that the online sale of electronic cigarettes could soon be banned, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a statement saying that it did not discuss any possible regulations in a series of listening sessions held last week.

"The FDA did not raise or weigh in on potential regulatory options -- including any potential restrictions on e-cigarettes or any other particular product category -- during these listening sessions," said Mitch Zeller, director of the FDA's Center for Tobacco Products. "Any details about the agency's intent to regulate additional categories of tobacco products will be made publicly available to all interested parties at the same time, through the issuance of a proposed rule."

According to the statement from the agency, the FDA frequently meets with members of the tobacco industry, as well as with public health groups and other stakeholders, to better understand any concerns or questions they may have. As part of this effort, listening sessions with e-cigarette companies have been held at their request and have given the FDA an opportunity to listen to their concerns and views.

The Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act of 2009 gave the FDA the authority to regulate tobacco products. In April 2011, the agency said it was developing a strategy to regulate electronic cigarettes as tobacco products under the 2009 measure.

The Anti-Smoking Lobby’s Clueless Crusade

The anti-smoking movement is going after e-cigarettes, the harmless inhalers that help people kick the habit. Nick Gillespie on why their single-minded zealotry has gone too far.

H.L. Mencken famously defined puritanism as “the haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.” He might have been describing contemporary anti-smoking activists, that dour band of fuss-budgets constantly on the prowl for new ways to make life slightly less bearable by limiting the choices available to grown adults.
e-cigarettes

Incredibly, the latest push from tobacco eliminationists doesn’t involve actual smoking, which has already been driven out of polite society more thoroughly than Rev. Jeremiah Wright sermons, early David Allan Coe records, andThree’s Company-era gay jokes combined. But it does lay bare the prohibitionist mindset and its fixation on scrubbing the planet clean of any behavior or attitude the crusader deems unacceptable.

Editorial: Rational policy for e-cigarettes

GHNS  —
E-cigarettes The growing popularityof e-cigarettes raises two issues for policymakers — one of them simple, the other more complicated.
E-cigarettes serve up nicotine extract in a vaporized form, cooking it without burning it. They deliver the same nicotine fix that comes from cigarettes, with the same smoking-like activity longtime smokers find so pleasurable, but there is no tobacco, no burning – and no smoke. A light vapor may be visible coming from users’ mouths, but it is odorless and, while there hasn’t been sufficient research to declare it harmless, its chemical composition bears no resemblance to secondhand smoke.

The first issue they pose involves the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, which is currently legal under state law.

E-cigarettes could significantly cut tobacco use: Study

A new study being published in theAmerican Journal of Health Behaviorsuggests that electronic cigarettes might encourage hard-core tobacco puffers to significantly cut back on traditional cigarettes, even when they say they don't want to.
The pilot study found that of 28 adult smokers—none of whom were interested in quitting—25, or nearly 90 percent, reduced their use of tobacco cigarettes during a week in which they smoked e-cigarettes from leading maker NJOY.

E-cigarettes targeted for state regulation

Winchester, MA —
e-cigarettes
As electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes, grow in popularity, it is legal in most Massachusetts cities and towns for minors to buy the smoke-free products marketed as an alternative to traditional paper cigarettes.

Boston is one of about two dozen Massachusetts communities that prohibit store owners from selling the nicotine alternative to minors. But some owners say they assumed those restrictions were nationwide.

The Food and Drug Administration has yet to step in and regulate the decade-old products that appear to be gaining popularity. The FDA recently said it would issue guidelines later this year.

While waiting for the federal government to weigh in, a Boston lawmaker wants the state to make it illegal to sell e-cigarettes and other nicotine delivery products to anyone under 18 years old in Massachusetts.

Twelve states have passed legislation restricting e-cigarette sales in some way, including Colorado and Minnesota.

Rep. Jeffrey Sanchez, D-Jamaica Plain, said current state laws are "silent" on electronic cigarettes and other products like it, and minors have easy access to them unless cities and towns take action. Sanchez wants statewide regulations, and filed a bill last week to prohibit sales to minors.

Ovale elips-C Review

Aug 22, 2013 by

Ovale elips-C

Keira Hartley-Barnes
The Ovale elips-C review from KokoVapes
After spending a little more than a week with the Ovale elips-C that we received from our friends at KokoVapes, I continue to be amazed that this is a descendent of an elips I received more than a year ago from Apollo eCigs (are they still in business?). No matter how hard I tried to successfully use the Apollo elips it just couldn’t put out near enough vapor or flavor to warrant a review. I wound up passing it off to someone else and quickly putting it out of my mind…forever, I thought.
But today, a week after looking at the box containing the elips-C from Ovale that was sent up to Boston from Spinfuel South, I’ve become a big fan. The fact is, the Ovale elips-C actually works, and works tremendously well at that.

E-cigarettes: What’s Not to Like?

Aug 21, 2013 by
E-cigarettesMany anti-smoking advocates have argued that electronic cigarettes don’t help smokers quit but merely prolong their addiction to nicotine. In other words, the hundreds of thousands of electronic cigarette users in the United States are smokers who, if only they stopped using e-cigarettes, would successfully quit smoking.
This is a ridiculous argument and those advancing it are not living in reality. The truth is that only 3 percent of smokers who want to quit will do so successfully in any given year. Thus, the vast majority of smokers who try to quit using electronic cigarettes are people who would not have otherwise quit.

Imperial Tobacco to Introduce Cigarette Alternative Next Year

Aug 15, 2013 by
tobaccoImperial Tobacco Group Plc (IMT), Europe’s second-biggest tobacco company, plans to introduce an alternative nicotine product next year in an effort to catch up with competitors such as British American Tobacco Plc. (BATS)
Imperial is “on track to launch our own products in 2014” through the Fontem Ventures unit, the Bristol, England-based company said today in a statement as it reported a 1 percent drop in underlying revenue in the nine months ended June 30.
“This is the first time Imperial has confirmed that it plans to launch something in that space next year,” said Erik Bloomquist, a tobacco analyst at Berenberg Bank in London. “It’s an important step forward for the company.”
Imperial has been trailing the likes of BAT and Philip Morris International Inc. (PM) in developing alternative nicotine products and electronic cigarettes in response to stricter government constraints on smoking.

Innokin iTaste 134

Innokin iTaste 134 The Sonic Screwdriver or ….

Aug 16, 2013 by

Innokin iTaste 134

iTaste 134

Many of you that are fans of Dr. Who will know exactly what I’m talking about when you see the Innokin iTaste 134 up close and personal…the rest of you are probably thinking “The Sonic What?”… and for that I apologize, but the very first time I opened the iTaste 134 metal box and saw the behemoth of an e-Cigarette the word that immediately came to mind was indeed “Sonic Screwdriver”.
All right, so anyway, the Innokin iTaste 134. The heaviest, meanest, most extraordinary e-cigarette I’ve ever vaped with. At $169.00 (MyVaporStore) , it is $10 less than a brand new, variable voltage ProVape ProVari. Unlike the ProVari, the iTaste 134 is not a variable voltage device. It is, however, a variable WATTAGE device, and as a business decision on the part of Innokin I think it was a wise choice. In fact, the iTaste 134 will, in my opinion, become a ‘classic’ e-cigarette in short order. It really is the coolest vaping device I now own.
But before we get into what it’s like to use one, and whether or not the iTaste 134 is in your future, let’s take a moment to look at it’s main electronics feature, Variable Wattage.

Are eLiquids Getting Better? Absolutely!

Aug 17, 2013 by

eliquids

One of the universal truths about the evolution of things is that, on the whole, they improve. There might be wrong turns, mistakes, and things like that, but eventually they right themselves and get better. This began to happen in early 2012 and it is happening in 2013… in the eLiquids marketplace.
If you compare the eLiquid marketplace from just a year ago to today’s marketplace you’ll not only notice a lot more brands of eLiquids, you’ll notice that nearly all eLiquids are getting better; better tasting, better vapor production, better everything. The chances of finding several flavors of eLiquid that you love to vape are exponentially easier than it was a year ago.
Why? What has changed?

eLiquids – Evolution

Just a handful of years ago the people involved in making eLiquids for e-cigarettes knew little about how all the ingredients interacted with one another. They knew that combining Propylene Glycol, Vegetable Glycerin, nicotine, and water/alcohol/mysterious-X, that it would produce thick vapor clouds laced with flavor that was basically harmless to inhale. Just how much did they really know in the beginning of it all? Compared to today, not much.

Arguments just a smokescreen for opponents of electronic cigarettes

Aug 16, 2013 by
cigarettes
The junior minister has written to Health Minister James Reilly and State’s chief medical officer, Dr Tony Holohan, asking them to “clarify the legal status” of the products “for which the health effects are uncertain.”
He claims to have been approached by people “worried” by what he calls “glamorous advertising”, and he cites a World Health Organisation conclusion that until these devices are deemed safe consumers should be strongly advised not to use any of these products. Kehoe wants “strong regulation of these devices”.
Kehoe is the first prominent Irish politician to fall in line with a pattern emerging throughout Europe, and other parts of the world, where electronic cigarettes seem to be upsetting people almost as much as the real things.
Denmark, Belgium and Norway have banned them, as have Turkey, Brazil, Argentina and Singapore. Despite the absence of smoke — which means there can be no impact on non- smokers as caused by second hand smoke from real cigarettes — France is looking at banning their use in pubs and restaurants and other public places.

Restaurants, bar owners allow diners to smoke electronic cigarettes

Aug 15, 2013 by
cigarettesOnce again diners are smoking cigarettes in restaurant dining rooms and around bars.
In a day and age of anti-smoking campaigns, the whole idea of smokers lighting up in public places seems completely out of place.
A few months ago when a diner lit up a cigarette at Arooga's Grille House & Sports Bar, a bartender immediately told them to snuff it out, said co-owner Gary Huether, Jr.
Only it turned out the person wasn't smoking a conventional cigarette, it was an electronic cigarette. While at first the idea of the devices created some confusion, patrons at the chain's restaurants are now permitted to smoke the cigarettes, also known as e-cigarettes.
"It's not like it's bothersome to people. It doesn't smell. It doesn't bother anyone," Huether said.
In fact, he is considering selling the cigarettes in vending machines in the sports bars as test-run to see how well the devices sell.
Increasingly, smokers are putting out their Marlboros and Camels in favor of battery-fueled, rechargeable electronic cigarettes with names such as Smoke Stick and V2 Cigs.

Harm of E-cigarettes?

Aug 14, 2013 by
E-cigarettes
Three Piece E-cigarette
There is no doubt that smoking is harmful. Tobacco is thought to kill nearly 6 million people every year, but do electronic cigarettes provide the answer to this assault on the nation’s health? As with conventional cigarettes, there is often an information deficit on the chemicals that electronic cigarettes contain and although some just use flavoured water vapour, others can contain a cocktail of chemicals including nicotine of varying concentrations and quality.
E-cigarettes have emerged onto the UK market relatively unregulated. In countries such as Brazil, Norway and Singapore they have been banned entirely or are only available as a regulated medicinal product. From 2016 the UK will follow New Zealand’s example and license e-cigarettes as a medicine so all e-cigarettes on the UK market will have to prove their quality, safety and effectiveness to the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency. Is this really an appropriate response to a product which already appears to be used reasonably safely by 1.3 million people in the UK?

e-Cigarettes: Electronic cigarette business is smoking

Aug 13, 2013 by
e-cigarettesCigarettes still satisfy a lot of smokers, but after years of doctors’ warnings and countless dollars spent on packs or cartons, some are ready for a change. What they’ve found is a cheaper alternative that’s giving the cigarette something to smolder about.
Patrick Gleason, owner of Three Days Smoke Shop in Gates andThree Days Vapor Lounge in Greece, said electronic cigarettes are becoming more popular among smokers trying to kick the habit. E-cigarettes use a battery-powered heating element and flavored “e-juice” laced with nicotine to create an inhalable water vapor that looks and feels like smoke.
